The Tavern is proud to be celebrating our 30th year in Historic Downtown Northfield! We opened the doors in 1984 with 3 important goals in mind: great food, served in a relaxed atmosphere, at a fair price. The Tavern continues this legacy today with its true scratch kitchen, fresh baked breads & desserts, homemade soups and sauces, and a dedication to the quality of its food and service.
The smell of freshly baked bread wafted outside to the street from the Tavern Restaurant as we walked around Northfield. After getting a recommendation from one of the local shopkeepers, we stopped for lunch there on our way to the airport. As we were feeling pressed for time, we mentioned this to the waitress. She then made sure that we were served as quickly as possible and brought the check before we were finished so that we could leave quickly.
The food was great. We tried the Bleu Cheesburger, Tavern Dunker (French Dip with Rosemary), and Chicken Stew. I'd pass on the stew next time. Definitely go for the potatoes with the sandwiches, they were unique and very tasty. We were quite impressed with the variety of cuisines on the menu as the restaurant is labeled "American."
The restaurant is located in the basement of the building that houses the Archer House and is accessible from the river side of the building. The interior is full of little rooms and halls - very publike. Getting to the restroom was quite an adventure, but gave us a chance to explore the building.
